Katamari Damacy

The big bad King of the Cosmos is here, and he just went and destroyed all of the stars in the sky. Why? He’s the King of the Cosmos, if he wants to destroy all of the stars in the sky then he’s going to destroy all of the stars in the sky. However, as the all powerful king of all that is, he doesn’t have to go and clean up his own messes. No, that’s why he has a son. And it’s that little green son of his that will have to go out and gather up various items on earth in order to redecortate the night sky with beautiful stars.

How, you may ask, could a tiny green boy possibly gather enough earth material to create a massive star? The answer is actually quite simple. Sticky ball. Yes, through the awesome powers of a massive sticky ball–a katamari–the prince, under the player’s attentive control, has to collect enough earth material in order to form constellations in the night sky. Because the prince is very small, the items you can collect at first are very small, ranging from pieces of candy to mahjong tiles. By collecting more and more items the size of your katamari increases, allowing you to gather even larger items. Though the items available start off small, eventually you’ll be picking up chairs, tables, animals, and even people!

Stages are timed, the only goal being to gather up as much stuff as possible. Really, just about anything can be assimilated into the giant katamari, it’s just a question of whether or not the current mass of the katamari is large enough to absorb it. Increasing the katamari becomes an obsession as the player tries his or her hardest in order to pick up larger and larger objects, such as people. Of course, people don’t exactly enjoy being assimilated into a giant ball of stuff, so they’ll flee and scream. Unfortunately for them, no one can escape the awesome might of that powerful sticky ball. Later on in the game, the katamari will become large enough to pick up buildings, pieces of street, and even mighty cloud beings.

(Note: Speed in video is amped up insanely.  Don’t watch if you get motion sickness….)

Picking up various things can become mighty boring, so various other little extras have been added to the game. Mixed in with the normal objects up for grabs in the twisted little world of Katamari Damacy are presents which, when attached to the katamari upon the completion of a stage, open to reveal various ornaments for the game’s princely protagonist to wear. Interesting background music is also incorporated, usually boasting actual lyrics. Most of the songs are Japanese in nature, but some possess English lyrics.

Upon a stage’s completion, the katamari is graded based on size and sent up into space by the King himself if it meets the prerequired specifications. Stages can always be replayed to increase previous scores or to find hidden presents (or just to listen to that sweet background music one more time). Katamari Damacy offers hour of endless fun and disgust as the player rolls a sticky ball all acoss the world, gathering more and more respect and fear they go. Well what are you waiting for? Those stars aren’t going to rekindle themselves!
